Permanent Resident (PR)

A Permanent Resident (PR) visa is a legal status that allows a person to live in a country as a resident, even though they are not a citizen. PR visa holders can usually work, study, and travel in the country, and they often have most of the same benefits as citizens, except for the right to vote or hold certain government positions
Here are some things to know about PR visas:
  • Eligibility
To get a PR visa, you must apply to the country's immigration authorities.

  • Pathways
Different countries have different pathways to apply for a PR visa, such as the Express Entry Visa, Provincial Nominee Programs, or Family Sponsorship.

  • Fees
PR visa fees can include fixed fees, such as processing fees, and variable fees, such as medical examination fees.

  • Documents
You will need to gather documents to support your application, such as forms, checklists, and supporting documents.

  • Educational Credential Assessment (ECA)
If you have a foreign education, you may need to get an ECA to show that it is equal to a Canadian degree.

  • Residency obligations
You may need to meet certain residency obligations to maintain your PR visa status. For example, in Canada, you must live in the country for 730 days to renew your PR visa.

  • Citizenship
In some countries, you can eventually apply for citizenship after obtaining a PR visa.
